Raza Bakir Shah, Joint Director - Banking Supervision

Raza Bakir Shah is one of the 12 members of the 2025 cohort of the Innovation Leaders Residency.

He is the Joint Director of the Banking Supervision Department at the State Bank of Pakistan, where he has played a pivotal role in regulatory reforms, particularly in enhancing the enforcement regime for Exchange Companies.

Raza is a graduate of the Cambridge SupTech Lab course on ‘Practical Data Science for Financial Supervision’, leveraging his insight on using advanced technologies including machine learning and large language models to improve supervisory processes. During his Residency, Raza will work towards building a comprehensive risk assessment framework for financial institutions that could serve as a dashboard displaying risk metrics at both macro and micro levels. In addition, Raza will conduct research to assess how bias in pre-trained models plays out locally to better understand potential needs for regionalisation and localisation.

Over the course of the Residency year, Innovation Leaders gain online support for the enhancement of their skills and competencies, and assistance in taking their projects to the next level, whether they are focusing on implementing the digital transformation of their business unit or on driving the development of a cutting-edge suptech application.
